Drawing inspiration from the beneficial, ‘re-mineralising’ and invigorating properties of the sea, salt therapy and Dead Sea spa treatments can help overcome many physical complaints, writes Audrey Raby.
Did you know that the age-old expression “to take with a grain of salt” has its origins in the belief that salt had healing properties and could be an antidote to poisons? To take (eat) something with a grain of saltwas actually to practice preventive medicine. Though often misused, salt still remains fantastic for preventing and treating some common health issues.
Salt caves
Built from natural blocks of sea salt and designed in the style of a cave, artificial caves provide a non-invasive treatment for patients suffering from a wide range of respiratory, digestive and dermatological diseases. Inside, the air is very pure and saturated with therapeutic sodium chloride, magnesium and calcium ions which in small quantities penetrate into the lungs and skin, relieving respiratory disorders and slowing down the ageing process. Some caves such as la Grotte de Sel in Brussels are equipped with electronic massaging chairs and are the location for additional therapeutic activities such as ‘sound therapy’.
Spa treatments
Typically using Dead Sea salt, algae and mud for their rich mineral constitution, spa treatments provide minerals and antioxidants to the skin, preventing the evaporation of moisture and slowing down the formation of wrinkles. The body scrub, also known as “body glow”, softens, hydrates and regenerates the skin texture by getting rid of dead cells, making the skin look instantly more radiant. For a pure moment of well-being, combine the scrub with a traditional Thai massage performed with steam warmed sea boluses and finish with a facial treatment. At Royal La Rasante, all three treatments form a package called ‘Sea Holistic Ritual’.
