Thailand was the No.1 choice of destination for international expatriates in 2011 due to its working environment, level of healthcare provision and quality of accommodation. Saudi Arabia was ranked second in the survey, bolstered by the country’s friendly culture, short commute times and excellent sporting facilities. An interesting fact to note is that expats outnumber tourists, with many living in compounds which offer a great social life and enable expats to share their experiences. 

Singapore came in third thanks to its exceptional transport links, career development opportunities and the ease of setting up utilities. It is an ideal place to bring up a family, with excellent educational facilities and comparatively low childcare costs. Expats are safe in the knowledge that the city has a very low crime rate. The climate is another plus, with year-round high temperatures attracting foreigners from less exotic climes.

China is an increasingly popular destination and, according to the survey, is the most cost-effective place to raise children. China is a country which is steeped in ancient tradition and this factor, along with its diverse geography and value for money, makes it an ideal destination for expats. If you like hustle and bustle in everyday life, China might be for you – it is the most densely populated country in the world.
